Scholarship Update: Update Link 11/12/13

This website is an effort to facilitate access to scholarships known to the counseling department and career center at South Albany High School. There is also a "Scholarship Booklet" available to students in the SAHS Career Center.  The website and the booklet are not a complete listing of all possible scholarships, but have the local ones and many we have advertised in previous years. Experience proves that new awards become available each year. Scholarships come in two forms: 1) Need-based scholarships which are available to those students who do not have the demonstrated ability to contribute to all educational costs, and 2) Merit-based scholarships which are awarded solely on the basis of academic or athletic merit of the student.

There are several realities for high school seniors. The greatest amount of money available can only be accessed by filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This document is available in the Career Center in December and should be mailed between January 1 and 15 to receive the greatest assistance. We will sponsor an evening early in December for seniors and their parents to receive pointers on how to complete the FAFSA. "Full-rides" are available through ROTC Scholarships and the Military Academies. Full tuition for athletic ability is available to the exceptional athlete. Colleges and universities offer scholarships and grants. These are both "need" and "merit" based. It is the student’s obligation to pursue these scholarships when applying for admission to specific colleges. Needless to say, whenever one is paid for ability, the competition is intense for these monies.

The system that will be used to handle scholarships is similar to previous years. Scholarship application availability will be announced on the Website, posted in the Career Center, the Counseling Office and senior English classes. The student has the obligation to ask for specific scholarship application forms in the career center. Once an application is completed, it is either to be turned in to the Career Center, or mailed to the address indicated. Occasionally, deadline dates are changed by the sponsoring agency after this booklet is published. In these cases, we work hard to announce these changes to students. In any case students absolutely must observe deadline dates and recheck Websites and the career center for updates..

We would suggest that both the student and parent go through the booklet and: 1) identify those scholarships for which the student qualifies, 2) place, on the calendar, the dates when applications are available and the deadline dates. It is important that both parents and students have an awareness of the noted months of the school year in which specific scholarships are needing attention. You will notice that many scholarships require the writing of essays, letters of recommendation, etc. This requires much time and energy. Good planning and time management skills are essential to the successful pursuit of scholarship monies.
