Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): This is the official term for what we refer to as a student’s “reading range.” The ZPD defines the reading range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading without frustration. Success at any reading level depends on the student’s interest and prior knowledge of a book’s content. The ZPD is an approximate measure, and teachers use their professional judgment to adjust the level of books read to match an individual student’s needs and interests.
