Built in 1960, Lafayette Elementary School is proudly educating its second and third generation of Albany children. Lafayette serves about 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade in fifteen classrooms. As a Title I School, we offer small instructional reading groups at all grade levels. All students participate in technology and music classes. For the last three years Lafayette has received exceptional and strong ratings on the Oregon State Report Card.

Lafayette's Mission Statement:
We are striving for academic and character excellence in a caring, nurturing, 21st Century environment.

Lafayette's Motto:
I will use safe hands and kind words to be respectful, responsible, and safe.

Our school is proud to offer:

  • Technology — A fulltime technology/media instructor, Mrs. Denney, provides instruction two or three times a week to our students in first through fifth grade. The instruction boosts skills in literacy, word processing, Internet use, language, social studies, mathematics and science. We are proud of our computer lab that houses thirty-four online computers.
  • Music Instruction — All Lafayette students receive music instruction from a music specialist, Mrs. Meidinger. Students obtain a wide exposure to music and introduction to playing the keyboard, guitars, xylophone, and autoharps.
  • Character Education For All Students — Throughout the school, we use the Second Steps program that teaches conflict and anger management. This year we are introducing the anti-bullying Steps to Respect program that models friendship skills as well as effective ways to deal with bullying behaviors.
  • Monthly Assemblies — Lafayette has monthly award assemblies to recognize students who are doing an outstanding job in academics and citizenship. Each month we recognize students who are exemplary in a character education trait that was highlighted for the preceding month.
  • Accelerated Reader Program — Using computer-generated tests to check reading comprehension, AR is available in Grades 1 through 5. (Here's a great website to help with early reading skills.) The program boosts reading fluency and serves as a motivation for reading. It is a positive supplement to our Harcourt Reading Series. Literacy is our Greatest Mandate.

We are dedicated to helping every student to become a reader before he or she leaves the fifth grade for we know the importance of literacy in our society.
