Good News About Students and Staff at Greater Albany Public Schools

NSTATwo Albany school bus drivers are headed to an international safety competition in July. Greater Albany Public School District's bus drivers recently competed in a regional safety exercise (known as a Bus Rodeo) in Lebanon, and represented our district well.

The top finishers in that event advanced to the state level competition held May 31 at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond. Albany drivers again drove very well, achieving the following results:

  • 1st place Minibus: Janet Turner
  • 3rd place General Conventional: Virginia Smythe
  • 3rd place Team: Janet Turner, Veronica Taylor, Virginia Smythe

Bus drivers Janet Turner and Virginia Smythe qualified for, and were invited to, the upcoming International School Bus Safety Competition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, slated for mid-July. Turner and Smythe are two of six Oregon drivers who will compete in Calgary. The annual competition is organized by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) with the cooperation of industry partners.
