Current District Talented & Gifted Program Philosophy
The Greater Albany Public School District is committed to an educational program that recognizes, identifies, and serves the unique needs of talented and gifted students. Talented and gifted students are those who have been identified as academically talented and/or intellectually gifted.
Mission
The mission of the Greater Albany Public School District is to ensure high academic success for all students by focusing on standards, promoting character development, retaining exceptional staff, emphasizing safety and fostering community partnerships.Current District Talented & Gifted Program Goals
The student will have opportunities to:- Gain a realistic concept of him/herself, and his/her strengths and potential.
- Increase sensitivity to others and acceptance of individual differences.
- Develop better self-understanding, self-direction and group skills.
- Gain instruction at his/her rate of learning.
- Progress at his/her rate of learning.
- Acquire skill in high-level cognitive processes such as: inquiry, critical thinking, creative problem solving, logic and research.
- Demonstrate learning through the use of various media and creative forms.
- Pursue educational enrichment outside the classroom.
- Work with students with similar needs and abilities.
- Explore areas of interest through expanded curriculum.
Parent role
Parents provide permission to test and identify students. In addition, parents are given an opportunity for input in selected programs and services that might be suitable for students. Fall conferences offer an important opportunity for parents and teachers to communicate about student needs. In addition, the schools provide information about student performance on the state assessments. Parents may also contact schools to set up additional appointments.
